She is Mexican and American. From the time she was a kid, she's had a keen determination to be involved in sports. Gerina first started golfing at 15. Gerina went to Goddard High School. The school won her place in the New Mexico State Golf Tournament during her senior year of high school. In addition to volleyball, she competed on the state level. She joined the University of Texas, Texas in 2003. She took home all the events she took part in throughout her final year.
